Check Before You Call

Each time a new season hits, a service technician is called out to repair a ductless system only to find the problem was a simple one that could have been resolved by the home owner.

  • Does your system have power?
    • Make sure that you are using fresh batteries in your handheld remotes.
    • Check the circuit breaker for the outdoor unit to ensure that you did not throw a nuisance trip and your heat pump system does have power.
    • Locate the outdoor disconnect switch typically mounted on the side of your dwelling near the outdoor condenser unit to ensure it is "ON".
  • Verify your system settings:
    • Ensure that at least one zone is set to "ON" and the desired temperature is set far below ambient for cooling mode, or far above ambient for heating mode.
    • If your system is in the heat mode, make sure that the system is not in Defrost mode. If it is, wait a few minutes for the system to complete its defrost cycle.
    • If your breaker was off, after turning the power on, give it a few minutes: many systems have a built-in time delay.
  • If your system is on, but not heating or cooling properly:
    • Check your indoor unit filters. If your filters have not been cleaned lately, clean them now.

If your ductless mini split heat pump is still off or running improperly after checking these items, please call us and we will send a service technician to help you.

Common Mini Split Heat Pump Service Issues:

The most common types of problem with mini split heat pumps are due to improper installation. We know how efficient and comfortable a ductless heat pump is, but if it is improperly sized or improperly installed, they can fail to live up to our expectations.Common problems include:

  • Issues caused by improper installation:
    • The end result of refrigerant loss due to improper installation or mechanical damage. This will invariably result in a reduced system capacity. * Improper zone sizing: If an indoor unit is too small it will fail to properly heat or cool in extreme weather. If it is too big, it will cycle on its lowest output and fail to properly dehumidify.
    • Condensation Leaks caused by indoor units installed out of level, or crimped or obstructed condensate lines.
  • Issues caused by lack or maintenance or component failure:
    • Changes in heating or cooling capacity over time caused by loss of refrigerant, or improper maintenance. Dirty indoor or outdoor coils.
    • Noisy operation indoors caused by a dirty filter or indoor coil.
    • Noisy outdoor unit may indicate a motor, compressor, or reversing system failure. *The outdoor component of the system may fail to start due to improper wire or breaker sizing, a tripped fuse, or a component failure.
    • Indoor zone fails to start may be caused by loose or defective control wiring, or obstructed or failed IR receiver.

Don't forget that we offer routine maintenance for our customer's home comfort systems. Once or twice a year depending on your unit, we can send out a service technician to do a complete and diligent maintenance check on your home's mini split. This will prolong the life of your mini split and keep it running in tip top shape year round. Contact Mesquite Heating and Air Conditioning today if you'd like to set up maintenance for your unit!
